With our human bodies tied to land, it’s easy to forget that there is a mystical world hidden within the depths of our oceans. There’s the Loch Ness Monster, The Kraken, and a long list of sea nymphs and deities that rule this realm, but perhaps none of the stories are as captivating as that of the Sirens.
The Sirens are a sisterhood of elusive mermaids who use their beautiful singing voices to lure sailors to unsafe waters. Modern stories describe Sirens as being half-person, half-fish, but long ago, Sirens were believed to be half-human, half-bird. After Persephone’s abduction by Hades, Demeter is said to have gifted wings to the Sirens so they could assist in the search for her daughter.
